Belt, chain, screw and wall mount
The difference between a belt drive and a chain drive is noise and cost. A belt drive pulls the trolley along a reinforced rubber belt and is the quiet option, the right call when there is living space above or beside the garage. A chain drive uses a steel chain, costs less and lasts well, and suits a detached or unoccupied garage where the rattle does not matter. A screw drive turns a threaded steel rod instead, which gives it fewer moving parts, though it is less common than it was. A wall mount jackshaft opener bolts beside the torsion bar and turns the shaft directly, so there is no rail and the ceiling is free. How much opener a door needs
The size of opener you need is set by the weight and width of the door, not by the size of the garage. A double wide insulated door is a great deal heavier than a single skin single, and it asks more of the motor on every cycle even when the springs are correct. Then there is the part nobody explains at the counter: a wide double door usually needs a strut, a horizontal steel reinforcement bolted across the top section, so that the opener pulls the whole section rather than bending the middle of it. Many door manufacturers require one when an opener is fitted, and a top section that has already started to bow is the evidence that it was skipped.
Battery backup and summer power cuts
Battery backup is a sealed battery in the motor head that will move the door a limited number of times with the power off, and it is standard on many current models rather than an add on. What it is worth here is specific. A monsoon outage in July with a car inside and no backup means finding the release cord in the dark and lifting a heavy door by hand, then leaving it unsecured or lifting it again to get the car back in. The battery is not a generator and it does not run for days, but it covers exactly the hours that matter.
What gets checked before anything is fitted
A new opener does not fix a badly balanced door, and installing one on a door the springs cannot hold will simply break the new unit. Before anything is fitted we run the balance test with the opener disconnected, look at the springs and cables and how many cycles they have left, check the rollers and the drums, and confirm the header has solid backing for the mount and the ceiling has structure for the rail. The outlet is checked too, along with the photo eye brackets and their wiring, since a new opener will not close reliably on damaged sensor wire. If the springs and cables are the real problem, we say so before you buy a motor.
What the install includes and how long it takes
The old unit comes down and goes with us. The rail and motor head are mounted to the ceiling structure or, on a wall mount, to the wall beside the torsion shaft; the door arm is set, the photo eyes are fitted and aligned, and the travel and force limits are set so the door seats on the floor without driving into it. The reverse test is then performed with an object laid under the door, because a door that will not reverse on contact is not finished. Remotes and a keypad are programmed and you are shown the emergency release before we leave. A straightforward replacement on an existing rail is usually a couple of hours, and a first time install, a wall mount conversion or a door that needs rebalancing first will take longer.
App control, if you want it
There are two ways to get app control and only one of them is this job. A new opener with the radio already built in gives it to you at install with nothing else to buy. The other route is a controller added to the opener you already have, which is a different visit and a different set of compatibility questions, and it is the better answer when the motor you own is sound. Keeping or retiring your remotes and keypad
Old remotes carry over only when the brand and the rolling code generation both match, which in practice is rare once a generation has changed, so most new units arrive with their own remotes and usually a keypad and the old handsets are retired. The part people forget is the car. Many vehicles have built in buttons in the mirror or the headliner that have to be taught the new opener, and some need a small bridge module before they will talk to a current rolling code at all. Openers for commercial bays and RV doors
A commercial bay does not take a household opener in a heavier box. It takes a duty rated operator chosen by how many cycles the door runs in an hour and in a day, because the thing that kills a light unit on a busy bay is heat rather than wear. An RV or oversize door has the opposite problem: height and weight. A twelve or fourteen foot door needs a wall mounted jackshaft opener or a commercial operator sized to the finished door, and a household trolley unit stretched with a rail extension kit is the usual reason a tall door strains and quits.
What decides the cost of a new opener
Drive type and force class set the starting point, and after that it is what the garage needs: a strut on a wide double door, new photo eye wiring where the old run is damaged, or a wall mount conversion instead of a like for like swap. The one people do not expect is the door itself, because springs at the end of their life have to be dealt with before a new motor goes on, and that is a separate repair we will tell you about before you commit to either. Usually, after it is reprogrammed to the new unit. Some vehicles also need a small bridge module before they will work with a current rolling code. We set the car up at the install rather than leaving you to sort it out later.
Do you take the old opener away?
