The steps below cover pairing a remote you already own, starting over after you lose one, keypads, and the buttons in your car mirror. There is also the symptom that means the problem is not programming at all: a remote that works from two feet and not from twenty.
How to reprogram a garage door remote with the learn button
Nearly every opener built since the mid 1990s pairs a remote the same way. Find the learn button on the motor unit hanging from the ceiling, not on the wall control: a small colored square on the back or the side, often behind the light lens or a snap off cover. Press and release it once. An LED beside it lights or blinks, which gives you roughly 30 seconds. Inside that window, hold the button on your remote until the opener light flashes or the motor clicks once. That is the confirmation. If nothing happens, the window closed before you got there, so press learn again and be quicker. Older openers have no learn button: match the tiny switches in the remote to the ones in the opener.
Rolling codes, and why a remote cannot simply be copied
Openers made since the mid 1990s use a rolling code. Every time you press the button, the remote and the receiver both move to the next code on the same list. The signal that just opened your door will never work again. That is why you cannot clone a garage door remote the way you copy a house key. It is also why a bargain universal remote often refuses to pair: it has to match the frequency and the rolling code system. The frequency is printed on the motor unit label, so check it before you buy.
How to reprogram a garage door remote after you lose one
If you lost a remote, bought the house from someone else, or had one stolen, pairing a new one is not enough. You have to erase the old remote from the opener memory, and the only way is to erase all of them. Hold the learn button down until the LED goes out, usually six to ten seconds, and the opener forgets every remote it knew. That also wipes the outside keypad and the car buttons, so plan on pairing everything back in one sitting.
Wireless keypads on the outside wall
A keypad pairs almost the same way, with one extra step: you choose the PIN. Press and release the learn button on the motor unit. Inside that same 30 seconds, enter your four digit PIN and press the enter or send key. The opener light should flash to confirm. If a keypad stops responding altogether, replace its battery before you assume it lost the pairing. A keypad on a west facing wall takes full afternoon sun and windblown dust in the keys. A flat battery in a hot plastic box is the usual reason one goes quiet.
The buttons in your car: HomeLink and Car2U
The mirror or visor buttons in most cars are HomeLink or Car2U. They train from your handheld remote, not at the opener. Do not start by holding the two outer buttons. That erases every channel in the car, not one, so save it for a car you have just bought. Hold your working remote one to three inches from the button, press both at once, and watch the car light change from a slow blink to a rapid one. On a rolling code opener there is a third step: press the learn button on the motor unit, then press and hold the trained button in the car for two seconds and release, up to three times. Park inside the garage first: that walk back has to happen inside 30 seconds.
It works at two feet but not at twenty
Short range is a different fault from no response, because reprogramming will not fix it. The usual cause is a weak battery: enough signal to be heard up close, not enough to carry across the driveway. If a fresh battery changes nothing, look at the antenna, the short wire hanging off the back of the motor unit. It gets tucked up, snapped off, or taped to the housing during a bulb change. The third cause is interference. Cheap LED bulbs are the worst offenders, because the drivers inside them throw radio noise across the band the opener listens on, so swap them for bulbs sold as opener safe. If all three check out and both remotes are equally short, the receiver board is the next suspect. That is a parts job, not a programming one.
When to call someone, and when not to
Programming is DIY. So is a battery, a photo eye lens wipe, a bulb, and a keypad PIN change. What is never DIY is anything holding tension or weight. A torsion spring above the door is wound tight enough to hold up a door that weighs several hundred pounds, and it holds that force with the door shut. The lift cables carry the same load. Do not loosen, unwind, or work around either one. Stop and call instead if the opener runs while the door stands still, the door sits crooked in its track, you can see a gap in the coiled spring, or the door only closes on a held wall button.
